Motherboard, Handmade Mixed Media Junk Journal
A completely one-off handmade journal created from an old hardback book, transformed into a wonderfully layered place for collecting, writing, drawing and making.
I have reworked the original book throughout using a mixture of vintage and found papers, old maps, illustrations, handwritten fragments, pattern pieces and printed ephemera. Layers of gesso have been brushed across the pages, partially obscuring what lies beneath and allowing little fragments of colour, typography and imagery to emerge through the surface.
The result is deliberately imperfect and beautifully tactile, with every spread completely different from the next. Some pages are quieter and pale, others reveal stronger pieces of their original collage beneath the gesso.
The cover features a hand-worked female figure surrounded by pattern and floral detail, giving the book the feeling of an artist's working journal or old altered scrapbook.
There is plenty of space to continue adding your own layers.
Use it for collage, journalling, sketching, photographs, collected ephemera, fabric scraps, notes and other small treasures, or simply keep it as a handmade decorative object.
Torn paper edges, visible gesso and brush marks, wrinkles, overlapping papers, partially obscured imagery and irregularities are all intentional and form part of the character of the piece.
