Vintage Japanese Sweet-Shaped Erasers in Original Packaging, c.1980

A wonderfully nostalgic pair of vintage Japanese novelty erasers, designed to look like brightly wrapped sweets.

The set includes two different designs, a translucent amber/orange round sweet with blue and white gingham-style ends, and a long yellow sweet with striped ends. Both remain together in their original clear cellophane packet, complete with its little metal staple.
The round eraser is printed “Sweet Smell Plastic Eraser / Gomme Plastique”, while the reverse carries multilingual wording including “Don’t Eat, Plastic Eraser” and “Made in Japan / Fabriqué au Japon.”

Dating from around the late 1970s to early 1980s, these are a lovely example of the playful novelty stationery produced in Japan during the period. The bright colours and faux confectionery packaging are particularly charming, and surviving examples still in their original packaging are increasingly difficult to find.

Perfect for a collector of vintage stationery, Japanese ephemera and nostalgic childhood pieces, or simply displayed amongst other small curiosities.
